So…. I had heard of Nneka and I was a fan of her tune Heartbeat and that she had won a Mobo but thats all i knew of her… since finding out i was going to be supporting her on the 27th November (tomorrow) I got a hold of her debut Album ‘No Longer at Ease’ and had a listen to it.
Her music is such a breath of fresh air. You can clearly feel all of her different influences. There is the heavy African Influence, and a stong sense of a connection to African culture and yet the music is still very British and Gritty with a Sca sounding edge.
When I first put it on it was about 11 at night and i thought i shall listen to it in the bath
.I had the volume on just high enough so I could hear it from the next room. The 85 year old partially deaf man next door Donny, Knocked in his slippers and asked us to turn down the music
for the simple fact that the bass is so thick that it must have been booming in his bedroom poor guy.
In her Lyrics she talks about her reality’s that she has faced and the struggle and the aparthide in West Africa. There is a song on the album (Track
Called ‘Halfcast’ were she talks about what it is like to not be accepted by your own people. Her music is reflective of a time and yet has timeless revolutionary aspect that if it wasnt for its modern instrumental you wouldn’t be surprised if it was created in the 1960’s, It is defiantly a classic Album and one that will never go out of fashion.
I would advise strongly that you pop out to HMV and grab a copy of ‘No Longer At Ease’. I Am looking forward to meeting and supporting Nneka tomorrow for the fact that shes a truly great artist and i have so much respect for her music!
Peace and Love
xXx
